Denmark and Sweden have freedom of religion. Overall, Danes and Swedes are very relaxed and tolerant about matters of faith.

Denmark still maintains its Evangelical Lutheran state church. Sweden made membership of its similar state church non-mandatory in 2000. Today, only the king is required to be a state-church member, which only seems fair enough since, after all, he is its head!
Ninety-two percent of Danes and eighty-two percent of Swedes belong to their state church.

Protestant churches in major cities usually have services in English once a week. There are six English-speaking churches in Copenhagen (Lutheran, Baptist, Anglican Episcopalian, and 3 Roman Catholic churches)
Among them is the Copenhagen International Church, representing a diversity of denominational backgrounds, cultures and nationalities. Its mission is to provide interdenominational Christian worship and programs for the English-speaking Community in Copenhagen. For more information about churches in our region, click here
