(1997, Bille August). With Julia Ormond, Gabriel Byrne, Richard Harris. Snow covers everything … except the truth. Based on Peter Høeg's bestseller, the film is set in snowy Copenhagen where a small boy is found dead after falling off a roof.

(1996, Lars von Trier). With Emily Watson, Stellan Skarsgaard. Oilman Jan is paralyzed in an accident. His wife, who prayed for his return, feels guilty — even more so when Jan encourages her to have sex with strangers. The interiors were shot in Copenhagen, the exteriors on the Isle of Skye.

(1988, Gabriel Axel). With Stéphane Audran, Birgitte Federspiel, Bodil Kjer. Babette, taken in by two elderly sisters in a small village when in dire need, shows her gratitude and love for them by preparing a feast when she wins the lottery. The film deservedly won the foreign film Oscar, capping off an unprecedented two-year best foreign film Oscar sweep for Denmark.

(1987, Bille August). With Max von Sydow, Pelle Hvenegaard. At the end of the 19th century, a boat filled with Swedish emigrants comes to the Danish island of Bornholm. The film won an Oscar for best foreign-language film.
